Blue Bell’s Steve Javie, who spent 25 years as an NBA official, is now telling ESPN and ABC viewers whether referees are making the right calls, writes Sopan Deb for The New York Times.

For the last decade, he has been helping passionate fans and casual supporters understand the rationale behind officiating decisions and explaining if he agrees with them or not.

He works from a control room in the league’s replay center he calls the “biggest sports bar without a bar.”

Javie is the right man for the job thanks to his long and successful career as an NBA referee. He was chosen to officiate the NBA finals 15 times, which is an assignment to referees with the highest grades for accuracy during the regular season and playoffs.

He had to retire from officiating in 2011 due to knee issues and has since been providing on-air officiating insights for ESPN and ABC. And while it is not the same as being on the court, he is satisfied with his new job.

“I’ll do it as long as they want me,” said Steve Javie.
