Aviridi is expanding its presence in the Philadelphia-area life-sciences industry with the purchase of a 26,000-square-foot industrial building in Pottstown, writes Jeff Ward for WFMZ 69 News.

This acquisition follows the biofermentation company’s purchase of a 10,000-square-foot Norristown building in April for its headquarters.

Biofermentation is a natural process that uses yeast to create molecules, according to Aviridi. The process can produce molecules without having to use a lot of land and resources. This reduces costs and the use of fossil fuels and provides a more consistent product.

Biofermentation can be used to make food ingredients, flavors, and fragrances, as well as pharmaceuticals.

The company decided to invest in Pottstown and Norristown due to their proximity to Philadelphia.

“Pottstown is an exceptionally attractive location for life-sciences manufacturing as research and development companies seek to commercialize their successes in the lab,” said Jamie Anderson, co-founder of Aviridi.

Aviridi plans to renovate the building and expects to complete all of the updates by early fall.

Last year, the company managed to raise $4.25 million in financing to develop its biofermentation technology.
