Audio recording professionals from across the Philadelphia region are invited to Montgomery County Community College’s Blue Bell Campus for a special event highlighting the College’s upgraded and immersive audio recording system.

The Sound Recording and Music Technology department (SRT) will host a meeting of the Philadelphia Section of the prestigious Audio Engineering Society (AES) to give industry professionals the chance to tour and discuss its immersive and state-of-the-art Dolby Atmos System.

The event, open to the public, will be held Thursday, June 2 from 7-9 p.m. in The Mix Room of the MCCC’s Advanced Technology Center, 340 Dekalb Pike, Blue Bell. Light refreshments will be served. The event is free, but registration is required. Those unable to attend in person will be able to view the event live via Zoom.

The event will be moderated by Chip Powell, chair of the Philadelphia Section of AES, and will feature David Ivory, Director of SRT. Ivory, along with Tech Engineer Vinson Tomas, will present an overview of the theory, technology, tools and aesthetic considerations used to drive a Dolby Atmos project from conception to completion.

Having built a state-of-the-art Dolby Atmos facility in the Advanced Technology Center last summer, Ivory is able to provide students with invaluable hands-on knowledge and skill sets needed to pursue careers in audio engineering.

This will be the Philadelphia Section’s first post-pandemic in-person meeting where the reality of Dolby Atmos can be experienced firsthand in a mix room setting.

“It’s been around for theatres for a while. Now people want to mix music in it. I personally feel Dolby Atmos/immersive audio will do for records what CDs first did. When CDs were introduced, all records were remastered for CD quality,” said Ivory, a Grammy-nominated engineer and producer. “I feel there’s going to be a big remix boom of remixing classic records in this format.”

Ivory said the event will be a great opportunity for professional engineers to see the new system but also interact with the next generation of engineers currently sitting in his classroom.

“It’s also a great chance for students here at the College to meet and network with these professionals,” he said, “and learn from some of the best in the business.”
