Jhansi Kandasamy, a scientist who grew up in Pottstown, is the recently appointed Idaho National Laboratory’s net-zero director with goals of achieving net-zero carbon emissions at the lab, writes staff for Idaho Falls Magazine

Kandasamy, whose family settled in Pottstown when she was 8 from India, was inspired by her late father to become a nuclear engineer. She has a degree in electrical engineering from Penn State University, and a Master of Business Administration from Eastern University.

Now with over three decades in the industry, Kandasamy hopes to achieve net-zero emissions within 10 years, and 75 percent towards the goal in 5 years.

Since starting her director role on Oct. 11, she got to work on INL’s infrastructure plan to find strategic ways to reach her environmental goals.

“I like to make things happen,” Kandasamy said. “I love a challenge, and I would tell you almost every job that I’ve had somebody tapped me on the shoulder and said, ‘Hey, we’d like you to do this job.’ That pushed me to excel and work harder to be the best.”

When she was starting out in the industry, she was the only female at her Limerick nuclear power plant job for years. As a leader and woman in STEM, she continues to break past gender barriers, challenging herself throughout her entire career.
