Two Montco Projects Among Recipients of State Funding Boosting Urban Farming

Two Montgomery County projects are among the 23 recipients of state funding that aims to boost urban farming across Pennsylvania, writes Michael Gorsegner for Local 21 News.

“Agriculture is not limited by zip code,” said Secretary Russell Redding of the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture. “It is zip code neutral.”

This over a half of a million dollars in state investment will help 23 urban farms grow their business operations, as farming and food still remain critical to the success of the community.

“You can stand here in the dead of winter in zip codes that are more metropolitan and can talk about agriculture,” said Redding. “That is the beauty of the farm bill.”

The recipients in Montgomery County include Mosaic Community Land Trust in Pottstown, which received $30,000 for the growth of CSA food shares that will be distributed to the community and for organic food education programming.

Meanwhile, Pennypack Farm Education Center for Sustainable Food Systems in Horsham received $2,500 for a new greenhouse heater for community access to seedlings.

Pennsylvania has invested over $1.5 million in grants to help urban farming since the 2019 Farm Bill was passed.
