Mehmet Oz, the celebrity heart surgeon who is running for the Pennsylvania senate with a Bryn Athyn address, has received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame just as his primary rival in the Republican primary released a TV ad calling him too “Hollywood,” writes Marc Levy for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Oz recently ended his daytime television show, Dr. Oz Show, after thirteen seasons. He was introduced at the ceremony by Maria Menounos, a television personality, and actor Dean Cain.

He gave a seven-minute speech that underlined his campaign trail characterization of him as a fighter who aims to empower his viewers with medical information that would help them challenge the medical establishment.

“Doctors weren’t always happy when I would have patients educated from my show walk in with lots of extra questions asking about alternative approaches, things that just weren’t part of the traditional medical upbringing,” he said.

However, his critics say that he often used his show to promote questionable products and medical advice, with a “bold, brave voice.”

After his speech, Oz knelt down to pose with the star and kiss it.

There is a required $50,000 sponsorship fee for celebrities who are nominated and chosen for a Hollywood star, though that price is subject to change, the Post-Gazette says. The Walk of Fame website says the money is used to create and install the star, as well as maintain the Walk of Fame.
