Many older job applicants worry about being dismissed without a fair shot just because they are no longer in their 20s or 30s.

Many wonder if there is something they can do with their resume to avoid their age being seen as a negative. Career coach Phil Rosenberg has some good advice on dealing with Ageism during a job search. Here are some of the biggest takeaways.

Trying to avoid being judged by your age through omitting dates on your resume will only be a detriment to you.

Applicant tracking systems might automatically dismiss your resume if it does not have dates for your previous terms of employment. Also, even if you get the interview, you come across as deceitful if you tried to hide the truth on your resume, which sets a bad first impression.

Instead, the LinkedIn post recommends leaning into your experience by using it to give strong examples of why you are a higher value candidate than a recent college graduate.

This entails giving concrete examples of your success in work projects. It also means showing what you have done to keep up with the latest advances in your field even if you have been done school for quite some time.

If an employer is worried that an employee’s more advanced age is a liability, they are essentially saying they fear you will have less knowledge, but higher salary expectations. If you can use your resume to show you are worth your salary, then your more extensive experience becomes the perk that it should be viewed as.
