Mount Saint Joseph Academy Senior Represents Nation at UN’s General Discussion on Children

By

Amilyn Thomas, a Mount Saint Joseph Academy senior, was chosen to represent the nation at the United Nations’ general discussion on children in alternative care, writes Dann Cuellar for 6abc.

“I personally speak from the perspective of being a sister of a special needs brother, Immanuel,” said 17-year-old Thomas before the United Nations panel on September 16.

Since March, her brother has been undergoing treatment at Children’s Hospital in Philadelphia. At birth, the now nine-year-old was diagnosed with severe cognitive delays, seizure disorder, and a rare genetic condition.

“All my life I wanted to find a way to speak up for my little brother,” said Thomas.

“Every time I looked at him, I saw that he was fighting to keep living,” she added. “I knew that he was suffering so much, and this was my way to repay him. I couldn’t be sad because he wasn’t.”

That determination led her to speak before the United Nations committee. Amilyn’s inspiring story of determination, positivity, and love for her family led to this moment.

“I am really proud of her because she stood up and she spoke for children who are special needs and who can’t talk,” said her mother, Merline Augustine.
