Overbrook Golf Club’s Ashley Grier Hopes Her Success Will Inspire More Women to Learn to Play, Enjoy Golf
Ashley Grier, one of the top female PGA professionals in the country and assistant pro at Overbrook Golf Club in Bryn Mawr, is hoping her success will inspire girls and women to learn golf and enjoy it, writes Joe Juliano for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
“It’s very important,” she said. “If girls see other girls playing, then they’re going to want to play.”
The numbers seem to be moving in the right direction nationwide. According to the National Golf Foundation, the number of adult and junior female golfers grew by 450,000 in 2020.
Also, around 24 percent of “on-course” golfers are women. Meanwhile, out of the Philadelphia Section PGA’s 870 members, 28 are women.
Grier, who has been at Overbrook for six years, most recently won the PGA of America’s 2020 Women’s Professional of the Year award and is currently leading in points for the 2021 Women’s Professional of the Year race.
She is also managing to balance her work at Overbrook and competing well.
“I feel like I’ve helped the programs here,” she said.
