Maureen Breslin was faced with a difficult decision in the summer of 2020. The Broomall native had recently graduated from Neumann University with a degree in Communication and Digital Media, and her post-graduation plans included graduate school at the National University of Ireland, Galway.

As she prepared to travel abroad, however, the pandemic continued to rage in the U.S. and Europe. Deciding that her education was worth the risk, Maureen Breslin began her graduate program in journalism at NUI Galway in September of 2020.

Less than a year later, she landed a coveted internship at the Brussels bureau of Politico and has been working in Belgium all summer.

“They interviewed me over a Zoom-type service, and they gave me a writing test and a social media production test,” she recalls.

The international media organization published her first article on July 5. She covered a pride march in the Georgian capital of Tbilisi in a story titled “European Countries Condemn Violence Against Tbilisi Pride March.”

“I was really excited, and I sent it to my parents and all of my friends,” Breslin says.

Since her debut story, Breslin has also written about human rights violations in other European countries for the respected news giant. In addition to writing articles, she is also working on the digital side of the business, producing social media content and graphic design.

During her internship, Breslin has been able to explore Europe. Traveling is one of her passions and she has visited Portugal, Germany, Denmark, and Luxembourg this summer as COVID restrictions were eased.

Breslin is currently working on her dissertation, a requirement for the master’s in journalism program, and will graduate from NUI Galway in November. She is currently interviewing with CNN for a streaming subscription service position that would take her to New York City or Washington, DC.
