Jim Fenerty, a longtime Germantown Academy boys basketball coach, history teacher, and athletic director, died on May 19 at age 71, writes Ed Morlock for The Reporter.

“A true family man, Jim always made GA, his students, his players, and his colleagues feel like his extended family,” said German Academy Head of School Rich Schellhas. “As a man, as a role model, he taught us to be defined by love, by relationships, by kindness, by passion, and by integrity – and never by our wins and losses.”

And while the wins were not as important to Fenerty as other values, his teams did win a lot. Between his three decades of coaching at Germantown Academy and eight years at Bishop Egan, he won 626 games.

His teams also won 17 Inter-Ac championships and his 2001-02 team was ranked fifth in the nation.

Fenerty also led the Germantown Academy program to its first Pennsylvania Independent Schools Athletic Association title eight years ago. The coach then retired after the 2018-19 school year.

He is a member of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame – Montgomery County and the Montgomery County Coaches Hall of Fame.
