Fewer people are getting infected with COVID-19 thanks to vaccinations, but pandemic hunger is still a major issue for some in Montgomery County, including many children, writes Jeff Cole for FOX 29 Philadelphia.

To help combat this issue, numerous nonprofits across the county have been working hard to provide meals for those in the most vulnerable categories.

The Patrician Society, a 40-year-old food pantry tucked in the basement of the St. Patrick Church in Norristown, serves 11,000 families each year, many of which are fighting pandemic hunger.

And with the help of many volunteers, the society helped 480 households last month. “Yes, more and more children, more and more families in need of diapers, in need of formula, and in need of baby food,” said LeeAnn Rooney of Patrician Society.

Sadly, this is not unusual for the county despite its overall affluence, according to Paula Schafer, who heads the Montco Anti-Hunger Network, a small nonprofit that supports dozens of food pantries in the county.

“Forty seven food pantries across Montco, just think about that,” she said. “That’s really a commentary on what hunger looks like here.”
