Director Brad Furman, a Lafayette Hill native and Friends Central School graduate, tries to find answers to the unsolved Notorious B.I.G. murder in his latest movie, City of Lies, writes Dan DeLuca for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

The movie, which stars Johnny Depp and Forest Whitaker, is a police procedural based on a true story but with added fictional elements. The movie focuses on late LAPD detective Russell Poole and his efforts to uncover who shot rapper Christopher Wallace, also known as the Notorious B.I.G., in 1997.

The director made the film with the cooperation of Wallace’s mother, Voletta, who plays herself in the movie.

“Miss Wallace is an incredibly inspiring woman,” said Furman. “Having her in the movie was crucial for me. I didn’t want to make a movie that exploited the murder of Christopher Wallace. I wanted to make a movie that honored him and Tupac.”

Furman’s other movies include The Infiltrator, his 2016 film starring Bryan Cranston, written by his mother, Ellen Brown Furman, and The Lincoln Lawyer, the 2011 movie starring Matthew McConaughey.

City of Lies is currently available on VOD.
