Hard Numbers Convey Sobering Realities for Conspiracy Theorists

By

While conspiracy theorists still continue to question the election results, the cold, hard numbers convey sobering realities and show that it was the suburban counties – especially in Pennsylvania – that swung the pendulum in favor of the Democratic candidate, writes Gerald F. Seib for The Wall Street Journal.

A new analysis from the American Communities Project has shown that it was not the big-city counties that shifted the election. In fact, President Donald Trump won a higher share of the vote in these counties than four years ago. In Philadelphia County, which was at the heart of one of the postelection disputes, Trump’s share of votes increased by 3.7 percentage points.

However, it was in the suburban counties where he lost significant ground. The analysis divided these counties into three categories: urban suburbs, middle suburbs, and exurbs.

In each of these categories, Trump’s margin fell in this election compared to four years ago. He still won in the middle suburbs and the exurbs, but his margin still shrank. Meanwhile, President-elect Joe Biden increased the Democratic share of votes in the urban suburbs significantly compared to Hillary Clinton four years ago.
