November is National Native American Heritage Month, and as such, West Chester University will host a pair of events in honor of this time that is designated to celebrate the rich and diverse cultures, traditions, histories, and contributions of Native Americans.

“Indigenous Photography” with Jaida Grey Eagle will be held via Zoom on Monday, Nov. 9 from 3-4:15 PM.

Join the Oglala Lakota photographer, artist, and filmmaker for a special discussion of Native American photography and the revitalization of indigenous symbols in art. What makes it unique? How should we discuss and report on indigenous artwork? How does it demonstrate “resistance through existence”?

Jaida Grey Eagle’s newest photo series is currently on display in the Museum of Anthropology and Archaeology’s Earth Day exhibition. Click here for more information or write to museum@wcupa.edu for the Zoom link. The event is sponsored by the WCU Museum of Anthropology and Archaeology, The Ethnic Studies Institute, Department of Art + Design, and the Office of Sustainability.

On Wednesday, Nov. 18 from 6-7:30 PM, WCU will host an engaging talk from Mark Charles, a dual citizen of the United States and the Navajo Nation. Charles is co-author of Unsettling Truths: The Ongoing, Dehumanizing Legacy of the Doctrine of Discovery.

During his talk, he will make the case for a national dialogue on race, gender, and class in the U.S., and he will discuss how the Doctrine of Discovery paved the way for the ongoing dehumanization of Indigenous Peoples. Click here to register.
