Sarah Mayland spends some quality time with her 5-year-old son, Jack, working on a crossword puzzle. Therapists at Milestone Therapy Group have been able to help Jack with his comprehension and sequencing skills, improving his ability to communicate.

In a time when health care services often seem impersonal, Milestone Therapy Group in Bala Cynwyd still feels like family, according to Sarah Wayland of Overbrook Farms in Philadelphia.

Milestone was created in June 2019 by Ashley and Kyle White. It provides speech, occupational and physical therapy to children from birth to 15 years.

Sarah’s 5-year-old son, Jack, has autism and was speech delayed. He needs the support of services like Milestone.

“I feel I can trust them which, as a parent, is really important,” Sarah said.

She’s impressed with how committed they are to each child.

Ashley spent an hour on the phone learning about Jack, even before she started seeing him, Sarah recalled.

That sentiment is echoed by Erin Caroulis, whose 3-year-old son James also receives therapy at Milestone.

“Ashley and Kyle’s approach is truly family friendly and engaging. James has made so much progress in the six months we have been working with Milestone,” Caroulis says. “He is so proud of himself and what he accomplished.”

Kyle attributes Milestone’s success to four approaches:

  • Creating a playful environment for the child that reaches them where they are. “Kids that are having fun just naturally come out of their shell and want to engage, interact and build a more natural relationship with the therapist,” Kyle said.
  • Keeping the same therapist. “This way they really get to know each other and get naturally comfortable with each other, encouraging the child to interact more.”
  • A woman and veteran-led service. Kyle is a former Marine so his drive to always give the best he can to help others runs strong. His wife Ashley is a certified and licensed Speech Therapist with several years’ experience specializing in early intervention.  She provides a woman’s point of view for the many moms that contact them about their children.
  • Family involvement. Family members are kept informed and encouraged to continue activities at home that reinforce what the child is learning in therapy. “We are huge on parent education,” Kyle said.

When a child has a problem, it can be frightening and frustrating for parents. They see their son or daughter unable to communicate, having trouble pronouncing words or stuttering, or speaking in gibberish.

The therapists at Milestone assure parents they are not alone and have the expertise to help.

Sarah said  Jack had trouble with sequencing events and communicating what he wanted.

Now, thanks to Milestone, Jack retains more of what he reads and can talk more easily about something he did at school.

“The thing that I found in the practice as a whole… is that they are really passionate about meeting the kids where they are, working with them that connects with their interests and their needs,” Sarah said.
