A long-planned tasting room by Karamoor Estate Vineyard & Winery in Fort Washington that was slowly taking shape in recent months suffered significant damage in a Friday fire, writes Paul Vigna for the Penn Live Patriot-News.

The fire on the estate owned by Athena and Nick Karabots was reported in the early morning hours, said winemaker Kevin Robinson who lives nearby.

“I thought it was a big accident on the turnpike, so turned on Fox 29 only to find it was our tasting room barn under construction,” he said.

No one was injured in the fire, but the structure’s roof was gone by 7 a.m.

According to Whitemarsh Township Fire Marshal Nick Weaver, there were multiple agencies and close to 100 firefighters on the scene on Friday morning. After managing to establish a water supply, they were “able to get the fire contained,” he said.

But despite the destruction, the owners are not giving up on their plans for the tasting room.

Robinson said that while Nick Karabots saw this as a setback, it was “certainly not the end of our story.”
