Tess Hart, a Haverford native and co-founder and CEO of Triple Bottom Brewing, founded the year-old Philadelphia brewery with a social mission in mind, writes Jenn Ladd for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Hart and her two business partners, husband Bill Popwell and brewer Kyle Carney, focus on three bottom lines in their work: beer, people, and planet.
The brewery teamed up with several reentry programs to introduce itself to potential employees. Around a third of its original 15 employees had either been incarcerated or experienced homelessness.
In fact recently, one of them transferred to a new full-time job.
“And that was the goal,” said Hart. “It was less than a year, and now she’s in the mainstream economy on her own, doing what she wanted to do.”
While the pandemic paused the brewery’s plans to serve as a community space, it has not stopped Hart from going on with her mission. She has launched a care package Joy Box filled with some of the best local artisan foods. The brewery is also providing free food to its neighbors from a community fridge and launched a monthly supper club that highlights women and BIPOC chefs.
