Dr. Margie Plon, an Elkins Park podiatrist, has put all her long-term planning on hold for the first time in almost four decades of practice due to the pandemic, writes Jeff Blumenthal for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

She now has all four of her employees back after they spent much of the pandemic either working part-time or collecting unemployment. Since the number of COVID-19 cases is spiking once again, her goal was to ensure they were at full-time status so they could receive unemployment benefits in case of another government-mandated shutdown.

Currently, Plon is seeing fewer patients than usual due to a pandemic-driven lack of demand as well as the safety protocols that extend the time it takes to get each patient in and out of the office.

“I have a tiny waiting room and a small staff,” said Plon. “It’s much easier to operate a practice with a larger waiting room and staff during these times. But I do feel as if I have loyal patients who do feel safer coming to a medical facility than somewhere else.”
