Dr. Andrew Kwak, founder of The Lumen Center in Bryn Mawr, is using robot-assisted surgery systems to help his patients fight baldness, writes John George for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

Kwak, a cosmetic surgeon who specializes in minimally invasive procedures, said his practice is the first in the region to offer a robotic hair transplant system, the ARTAS iX system.

He established The Lumen Center fifteen years ago to provide patients with the latest technology innovations in a physician practice setting.

“This is really just the latest iteration of that goal,” said Kwak. “I’ve been tracking this technology for the past 10 years.”

The robotic technology is guided by the physician to extract and implant hair follicles. In doing so, it minimizes fatigue for technicians as well as making the whole process smoother and more effective.

ARTAS is able to craft and design the hairline precisely where the patient wants, which is an improvement over older systems.

“It’s really quite incredible,” said Kwak. “It has the Rolls Royce of robotic arms, the same arm used by companies like Boeing and SpaceX.”
