Recreational Equipment, the nation’s leading retailer of outdoor recreational products with locations in King of Prussia and Conshohocken, saw its business boom during the pandemic, writes Jason Nark for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

REI is organized as a consumers’ co-op and sells everything from tents to climbing equipment to kayaking gear.

The company had to close its stores temporarily when COVID-19 swept the nation. But then the pandemic created an explosion of interest in the outdoors and many retailers saw their sales of kayaks, bicycles, and fishing gear go through the roof.

According to Eric Artz, CEO of REI, the company was fortunate to have a product that was sought after by the public during the pandemic, but “we’re also thankful we can fulfill our purpose and our value.”

“It’s only going to mean more people are going to have a stronger relationship with the outdoors after the crisis,” he said. “Our business has been extremely strong.”

The co-op is also making business decisions that will help the environment, including plans to cut its carbon footprint in half by 2030 by reducing emissions from its suppliers and planting more than a million trees.
