Joerg Ahlgrimm, a former Baxter Healthcare executive, has joined King of Prussia based Discovery Labs as its president and chief operating officer, writes John George for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

“With Joerg, we have added an industry titan with impeccable credentials to oversee our operations,” said developer Brian O’Neill, co-founder and executive chairman of Discovery Labs.

Ahlgrimm will oversee the company’s ambitious growth plans to bring more than 1,700 people to the site.

Discovery Labs is located on a campus once occupied by GlaxoSmithKline. It specializes in gene therapy development and manufacturing services, large scale testing, and providing real estate services for the life sciences industry.

The new president and COO was attracted to the company by the work it plans to do in cell and gene therapy.

“Cell and gene therapy has the potential to cure people,” he said, adding that he believes that “cell and gene therapy is going to be the next revolution.”

Ahlgrimm is now planning to look primarily locally when hiring the planned 1,700 people over the next few years.

“The Philadelphia area is a fantastic source for talent,” he said.
