Commonly experienced during the first year of college is the traditional challenge of balancing school and work. However, Savannah Masker ’24 is taking advantage of starting her college career online by working 12-hour overnight shifts as an EMT before her classes begin for the day at 8:30 AM.

“It’s easier since we’re online, because I can work the night shift. If we were on campus I’d probably only be doing weekend shifts, which would still be manageable, but I would probably feel overwhelmed,” said Masker.

The Biology/pre-Physician Assistant major has always known she wanted to in the medical field, having been inspired by the doctors and nurses that cared for her when she was born prematurely.

She has also watched her parents and grandparents dedicate their lives to serving others as volunteer firefighters and first responders.

Although Masker is taking a full course load and works as an EMT overnight on top of that, she intends to play field hockey for the Arcadia Knights team.

At age four, Masker began taking tumble classes and for the next 11 years, she competed cheer on a highly competitive team in All Star Cheerleading and even made it to the Cheerleading World Championship.

After competing at the world championships, Masker felt she had gotten all she could out of cheer made the tough decision to switch to field hockey, which she now coaches as a volunteer.

“Field hockey quickly became a way of life, and has taught me many valuable lessons over the years, such as, commitment, time management, and a competitive spirit that I carry with me on and off the field,” said Masker.
