Brendon Jobs, Haverford School Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and one of the top teachers for 2020, made sure to bring the school’s affinity groups online after classes went virtual in spring due to the coronavirus pandemic, writes Lisa Dukart for the Main Line Today.

Jobs teaches “Modern Black Lives” as an elective course at Haverford School where he focuses on African-American history from the civil rights movement to the present. He also provides an elective “Human Relationships,” which is a consortium course with Baldwin School.

His methods are groundbreaking. He uses an inquiry-based approach that brings the students into the planning process.

“Students are investigators who are interested most when they get to formulate their own questions – when they get to shape what their learning looks like,” he said.

Also in addition to ensuring students still had places to connect to when the pandemic started by bringing groups such as Black Student Union, Jewish Student Association, Pan-Asian Student Association, and Gay-Straight Alliance online, he is incorporating recent national events into the conversation.

“I’ve been leaning on reflection as a vehicle for helping us make meaning of what’s happening in this moment right now,” he said.
