Situated on 3,452 sprawling acres and with 35 miles of trails, Valley Forge National Historical Park is an ideal place for a day of hiking or exploring, writes Christine Speer Lejeune for the Philadelphia Magazine.
In addition to its stunning nature, the park has enormous historic importance as the place where George Washington and the Continental Army persevered against the odds during the winter of 1777-1778.
The park can be explored in numerous ways. Valley Forge usually offers self-guided as well as expert tours of many types, including driving, biking, trolley, and day-long hiking excursions.
The good news is that it is also easy to simply wing it, as there are plenty of maps and brochures available at the park’s website and visitors’ center.
Along with the outdoor museum, the biggest draw is the park’s expansive trail system. This offers a multitude of experiences that include paths that are paved or natural, flat or hilly, easy or hard, along with many more combinations.
Smooth Joseph Plum Martin loop and Mount Misery, with its challenging terrain, are some of the favorites.
