Danielle Whiteman and Adam Watson have made Cairnwood Estate in Bryn Athyn feel more like home for their wedding by bringing in their favorite artwork, write Kristen Schott and Sarah Zlotnick for the Philadelphia Magazine.

The couple was looking for a historic setting for their “Black Gatsby”-themed reception and the stunning estate fit the bill nearly perfectly.

“The Great Gatsby was one of my favorite books as a teenager,” said Whiteman. “I loved the huge party scenes.”

One thing the pair wanted to change was the portraits as the family who owned the estate was white.

“For a lot of Black people, being in those spaces – while they are beautiful, it’s an emotionally charged experience,” said the bride.

So they became creative. They added pictures of themselves over the years and displayed them on bookshelves and tables. They also brought several portraits to cover those in the library and behind the bar.

The additions have turned out to be a hit.

“I hadn’t thought about how our guests would interact with them, but people Instagrammed them all night,” said Whiteman.
