Montco Intensifies Efforts to Hire Young People as Poll Workers for Election Day
Following staffing problems that hampered the state’s primary election, Montgomery County is intensifying efforts to hire poll workers for the November presidential election, write Ximena Conde and Zachariah Hughes for WHYY.
County officials are focusing on bringing in a new wave of younger poll workers as well as coaxing more senior workers to once again return to the polling places in November. Using this approach, the county anticipates filling around 2,500 polling station positions.
Bringing in younger poll workers has gained new urgency in an election year where the pandemic is bringing widespread changes on how Americans cast their ballot.
The county is also gradually increasing its Election Operations Office using a combination of part-time and temporary employees as November approaches with the intention to triple it by Election Day.
“These staff members help answer questions from constituents, open and sort mail, process voter registrations, and mail-in ballot applications,” said Montgomery County public affairs manager Teresa Harris. “We also have a sizable contingent of county employees in other departments who have been cross-trained, in the event we need backup.”
