The reaction of many golf fans to Kirk Triplett’s Black Lives Matter bag sticker during Bridgestone Senior Players Championship continues to perpetuate a stereotype of the popular sport’s fans as being an out of touch group, writes Joe Wowk in an opinion for the Golf City.

Wowk worked as a caddie at Commonwealth National Country Club in Horsham during his high school and college years. There, he met Triplett and ever since has been his big fan.

The unkind and often ugly reaction to his latest outing truly “made me sad,” wrote Wowk.

Triplett put the BLM logo on his bag as a sign of support for his adopted son, Kobe, who is African American. In an interview with PGA Champions Tour social media, Triplett specifically mentioned the need for conversations regarding race relations and equality.

“It doesn’t just have to come from the African-American side, right?” he said. “It needs to come from all sides. So, hence the sticker.”

And because of that, wrote Wowk, “I’m an even bigger fan of Kirk Triplett.”
