Elkins Park Native Offers Socially Distanced, Guided Backyard Wine Tastings
What started off as a fun quarantine activity for Elkins Park native, Isabel Hirshberg, and her family has now turned into an attempt to further her education, writes Stephanie Farr for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
After her fellowship at Kingston Family Vineyards on the Pacific coast of Chile was abruptly ended due to COVID-19, Hirshberg only had a day to gather the essentials and return home. With her she brought 12 bottles of wine.
With those 12 bottles of wine, Hirshberg began hosting wine tastings with her family in preparation for the introductory sommelier exam and decided to offer a socially distanced, backyard wine tasting experience to the public.
Within a day of posting on an Elkins Park Facebook group, 80 people had responded that they were interested. “It’s so difficult to celebrate special occasions and events right now,” Hirshberg said.
Ranging between $200 and $240 depending on the wines, Hirshberg offers a two and a half hour, four bottles of wine experience.
However, Hirshberg doesn’t only offer wine at her tastings. As an avid food lover, she also cooks and bakes little “nibbles” specially paired with the wines she brings, as well as assembles charcuterie boards. It all depends on her clientele and their interests.
