Pennsylvania produced the second-highest amount of craft beer nationwide last year, with Montgomery County being one of the top contributors, according to a staff report from the Breweries in Pennsylvania.

The Keystone State produced 3,606,444 barrels of beer in 2019, topped only by California at 3,664,080 barrels.

Pennsylvania also ranked in the top half of the country for most major categories. These included coming second in economic impact, fourth in gallons produced per adults aged 21 and above, fourth in impact per capita, and fifth in the number of craft breweries per state.

And at 401 locations, the number of breweries currently operating in the Keystone State is also at an all-time high. This helped push Pennsylvania from sixth place in 2018 in the country to fifth place last year.

Still, the state saw the addition of new breweries slow down significantly last year. In 2017 and 2018, Pennsylvania saw the number of breweries increase by 77 and 72 respectively, compared to 47 in 2019.

Within Pennsylvania, Montgomery County ranked second when measured on the overall number of craft breweries with 34 facilities.
