Hannah Book, a high school student in Bryn Mawr, is currently grappling with the choice between an unknown and possibly virtual college experience or taking a gap year with limited opportunities, writes Alyson Krueger for The New York Times.

Eighteen-year-old Book has been accepted to Emory College in Atlanta, her first choice. But the excitement she felt has since been muted as it became increasingly clear that she most likely will not have a traditional college experience in the fall. Some colleges might opt to go the virtual route come fall and others may implement strict social distancing policies.

“The social environment that comes with college is so important to me,” said Book.

But the alternative is not without its issues. Many programs she is considering for her gap year – such as volunteering at food banks – may not materialize.

“Senior spring is supposed to be this carefree time when you have your future planned out in front of you,” she said. “I am so worried I am going to make the wrong choice, and I am very overwhelmed by it.”
