Faculty and staff at Cheltenham High School surprised the class of 2020 by going to the home of every senior with decorated cars and lawn signs to wish them congratulations, writes Annie McCormick for 6abc.

Seniors were scheduled to walk wearing caps and gowns at the graduation ceremony on June 6. However, the coronavirus pandemic not only canceled classes but also this rite of passage at graduation.

However, wanting to still do something special for the disappointed students, the school’s faculty and staff got to decorating and preparing for a unique surprise.

“We know school ended abruptly and we want to highlight them, thank them, and show how much care and love we have for them,” said Principal Renato Lajara.

The effort was successful, as students were both surprised and touched by the gesture.

“I think it was really nice of them to do that knowing we can’t come outside to go to graduation or go to prom,” said senior Lakeisha Jamison. “It was a really nice gesture for them to do that because they really care about us.”
