Bloomberg: Out of 70 Coronavirus Vaccines in Works, Inovio’s Among Three Leading Candidates
According to the World Health Organization, there are currently 70 coronavirus vaccines under development worldwide, with Inovio Pharmaceutical’s vaccine among the three leading candidates already being tested in human trials, writes Lisa Du for the Bloomberg.
The other two leading candidates are an experimental vaccine from CanSino Biologics and the Beijing Institute of Biotechnology and a treatment being developed by Moderna.
Right now, the progress on creating the vaccine is happening at an unprecedented speed as it seems more and ever more unlikely that containment measures will be enough to stamp out the deadly virus.
The drug industry worldwide is hoping to compress the process of bringing a vaccine to market which usually takes between ten and fifteen years to within the next year.
Drugmakers of all sizes have been attempting to develop a vaccine, which would be the fastest and most efficient way to contain the virus. Several pharmaceutical giants, like Pfizer and Sanofi, also have vaccine candidates in the preclinical stages.
Inovio began human trials earlier this month, while the other two leading candidates got their start in March.
