The Jack M. Barrack Hebrew Academy in Bryn Mawr has won the Tri-County Independent School League for the first time in more than two decades with help from its new coach and former analytics guru Ben Falk, writes Gabe Friedman for the Sun Sentinel.

Thirty-one-year-old Falk developed an affinity for basketball statistics as a teenager. He caught the eye of leaders in the then-burgeoning field through the many statistical analyses he posted online.

He was soon hired by the Portland Trail Blazers, where he spent five years before being snatched up by Philadelphia 76ers in 2016.

Despite cultivating a reputation as a respected basketball numbers guru, Falk decided to give coaching a go. As an Orthodox Jew, he found the prospect of coaching at a Jewish high school an appealing option.

He first volunteered as an assistant coach at the Bryn Mawr school for two years before taking over the program in 2018-19.

“It’s been incredibly gratifying,” said Falk. “The kids still really love the game and they’re excited to play, and they’re competitive and they work hard.”
