Lower Providence Township is the second municipality to join Audubon-based J.P. Mascaro & Sons’ flexible packaging recycling pilot program, writes Adam Redling for the Waste Today.

Township residents will join nearby Pottstown Borough residents in including flexible plastic packaging as a recyclable. Until now, this was put in landfills.

The initiative is part of a recycling pilot program targeting flexible plastic packaging. It is industry-sponsored and aimed at demonstrating the viability of processing such plastic at automated materials recovery facilities along with being able to market the recycled byproduct to end users.

The materials including plastic bags, wraps, pouches, product packaging, and other similar items will be sent from Lower Providence Township to Mascaro’s TotalRecycle facility in Exeter Township.

“Lower Providence is pleased to be part of this recycling initiative,” said Lower Providence Township Manager Donald Delamater. “It’s an added benefit for our residents and, just as importantly, moves our environmental efforts in the right direction.”

Collection of Lower Providence Township flexible plastic packaging as recyclables will start in December after the company notifies all households of the types of flexible plastic that can be collected as recyclables.
