The Board of Trustees of the Valley Forge Military Academy and College, the official Military College of Pennsylvania, has ratified recommended changes from the College Oversight Committee to its collegiate program.

The institution will be consolidating its collegiate programs and refocusing admissions requirements in an effort to bring its military education programs to new heights and provide the greatest possible experience as tides change in higher education.

“This decision was not made lightly, but these strategic moves will take us back to basics,” said John English, Chairman of the Board of Trustees. “Additionally, it is the right business model to carry us forward as we look at fast-emerging realities in higher education.”

The “Pathways Program” for civilian students will be discontinued at the conclusion of the 2019-2020 school year. The College will continue to offer a rigorous academic program to students wishing to experience a military education. This will include the Early Commissioning Program (ECP), one of just four in the country.

The ECP is a U.S. Army program where students can become commissioned officers in two years, rather than a traditional four-year program. Valley Forge Military College has the only ECP in the northeastern U.S.

With this shift in priorities, VFMC will discontinue collegiate athletic programs with the close of the 2020 academic year. All winter and spring sports will play through their 2020 season.

“We are seeing a demographic shift across the United States, with fewer children being born and fewer young adults choosing to attend college,” said Maureen Malone, Dean of VFMC. “Rather than trying to be all things to all people, we can best serve our students and families by focusing deeply on our specific area of expertise: developing strong and well-rounded future military leaders through training and education.”
