Weavers Way co-op, which has several stores in the Philadelphia area including the one in Ambler, is proudly providing community members with fresh goods from local farms and businesses, writes Matteo Iadonisi for 6ABC.

“It is not just a shopping experience,“ said Ashley Hammock of Weavers Way Co-op. “It’s a community. And we are all in this together.”

The shelves at the co-ops are filled with fresh and creative flavors with the words “Local” and “Organic” dotted across product labels. Residents who become members of the co-op are considered stakeholders in the business and as a result, they receive other in-store rewards.

On October 19, which was recognized by Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney as the first Philadelphia Grocery Co-Op Day, each store held various activities. As part of this they offered samples of different goods to encourage residents to learn more about the co-op concept.

This included tastings of Baba’s Brew’s “Philly Jawn” kombucha made with locally grown fruit at Weavers Way in Mt. Airy.

“You can walk out your door, visit a co-op and know and know you’re supporting all the farms around you and the people in your community,“ said Kelly Carpenter of Baba’s Brew Kombucha.
