Horsham’s Reed Tech Finds Team-building Opportunities in Helping People in Need

Horsham-based Reed Tech is among a growing number of businesses are providing community service as part of their team-building efforts, writes Joseph N. DiStefano for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

The Lexis/Nexis affiliate offers two paid days off to its employees each year to do community service. And while they can choose what they want to do themselves, the top choice is always group projects at Caring for Friends nonprofit.

Previously known as Aid for Friends, the Philadelphia-area charity that has been active since 1974 has a mission of alleviating the hunger and loneliness of senior citizens and others who feel isolated by providing food and companionship.

Those volunteering with the organization are tasked with cooking meals for the homebound, delivering meals, or making regular phone calls to those who need company, among other things.

The nonprofit has found Reed Tech and other local businesses to be an invaluable source of volunteers.

“Folks immediately sign up,” said Mike Ford, human resources chief at Reed Tech.

He added that by feeding people, the employees “also feel good about themselves. Making meals is tangible. It’s perfect for us.”
