Pennsylvania State Senator Talks About Miscarriages, Importance of Storytelling

Pennsylvania State Senator Amanda Cappelletti, who represents Montco, talks about miscarriages and the importance of storytelling.

During a roundtable in Harrisburg last month, Pennsylvania State Senator Amanda Cappelletti, who represents parts of Montgomery County, including Lower Merion and Blue Bell, explained the importance of storytelling when it comes to protecting reproductive rights, writes Graham Harrington for The Keystone.

“Storytelling humanizes people,” she said in a recent video interview.

“From a very personal perspective, I was new to the legislature,” she said. “I’m a fairly progressive legislator, and some of my colleagues in the Republican caucus hadn’t taken the time to get to know me.”

That was until October 2021, when she shared with them that she experienced two miscarriages on her journey to motherhood.

“And from that moment, I was able to make connections with some of my colleagues across the aisle,” said Cappelletti. “It humanized who I am and what I stand for.”

She added that “the hope is, as people share their stories and why Planned Parenthood is important to them, why abortion access is important to them, why having providers who hear them out makes people feel seen and heard and don’t pass value judgments on their patients,” the issues will become more relatable.
