Philadelphia Archdiocese sells St. Charles Borromeo Seminary

By

St. Charles Borromeo Seminary is leaving its longtime Wynnewood home and relocating its programs to Gwynedd Mercy University campus in Lower Gwynedd Township.

St. Charles Borromeo Seminary in Wynnewood has been sold to Main Line Health, according to information released Friday, writes Matthew Gambino for catholicphilly.com.

The property has been for sale for years, and has been an ongoing process we’ve reported on several times, despite a Sept. 2017 story on surging enrollment at the seminary.

In a June 2016 story the archdiocese announced that it was looking to relocate the seminary.

No details of the sale were released Friday.

The 75 acres tract is one of the largest in Lower Merion Township untouched by commercial or residential development, and was once considered for an expansion by the township school district as reported in this January, 2018 story.

Main Line Health owns six hospitals in the Philadelphia area, including Lankenau Medical Center just across Lancaster Avenue from the seminary.

St. Charles Borromeo Seminary was founded in 1832 by Bishop Francis Kenrick, the third Bishop of Philadelphia. The seminary was initially located at the home of Bishop Kenrick on Fifth Street in Philadelphia, according to the seminary’s wikipedia page.
