The Archdiocese of Philadelphia has announced that St. Charles Borromeo Seminary has abandoned its plans to consolidate operations on its upper campus in Wynnewood, and is instead looking to relocate, writes Harold Brubaker for the Philadelphia Inquirer.

The seminary, which hosted Pope Francis during his recent visit, is looking to affiliate with a local Catholic college or university. It then plans to move into newly constructed buildings near or on a future partner’s campus, as its original plan to lease 39 acres near the intersection of City and Lancaster Avenues fell through.

St. Charles Borromeo has seen an increase in enrollments recent years, growing from 128 three years ago to 142 this year, with the number expected to climb to 168 this fall. St. Joseph’s University and Villanova University have been mentioned as the most likely choices, as they are the two largest Catholic universities in the region.

“It is my strong belief that this new direction will allow us to build on the already-solid foundation of our present program by significantly strengthening and enhancing our seminary,” said Bishop Timothy C. Senior, Rector of the seminary.

He added that the new path the seminary selected will allow it to pursue new facilities, which will be able to better serve the modern academic, spiritual, and human needs of both the seminarians and lay students.
