Shopping under the influence is real, and lucrative

By

Shopping online under the influence of alcohol is a growing trend among consumers in the United States, estimated to bring in $45 billion dollars a year.

An alarming trend is emerging, a growing number of online shoppers are “shopping under the influence.”

An incalculable number of surveys have been conducted about online shopping, however very few have focused on the amount of money people spend while under the influence of alcohol. Now that people can shop on the couch with a click of a button, drunk shopping has become a lot more common, writes Niall McCarthy of forbes.com.

People will come home after a night of drinking, power on their computers or phones and purchase expensive things they don’t need. The next morning, they barley remember or completely forget what they bought.

“The Hustle” conducted a survey of over 2,000 alcohol consuming adults. The survey concluded 79% of alcohol drinkers made at least one purchase while under the influence. The average annual total of drunk purchases among the group was $444. “The Hustle” estimates drunk shopping to be a 45 billion dollar a year addition to the U.S. economy.

Nearly everyone chooses Amazon for their drunk shopping needs, almost 90-percent of shoppers. Shoes and clothing are the most commonly purchased items by drunk shoppers, with movies and video games coming in second place.

“The Hustle” explains the differences in demographics when it comes to drunk shopping. “Women (80%) are slightly more likely than men (78%) to drunk shop. This makes sense since women generally shop more than men — especially online. Drunk shoppers also tend to be younger. Millennials outrank baby boomers by 13%, which might be attributed to the rise of e-commerce.”

Not surprisingly, the more money someone makes, the more likely they are to spend more when shopping under the influence.
