Montgomery County recently completed the construction of 1.1 miles of  multi-use trail and the installation of 1.0 mile of shared bicycle lanes along Industrial Highway and Hanover Streets in Pottstown and Lower Pottsgrove Townships. Montgomery County funded the design and remaining $810,251 in construction costs. The Department of Conservation & Natural Resources (DCNR) provided a $199,000 grant towards the construction of the trail.

“This is part of an 800-mile-plus system of trails in a nine-county region,” said Sarah Clark Stuart, executive director of the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia.

“We’re in the business of putting together puzzle pieces and this is a key piece of the puzzle,” she said.

Completed all but for a crossing on a infrequently used spur of Norfolk Southern’s rail lines last year, the nearly one-mile section of trail has waited months for the small patch of macadam and baffle fences that mark the trail’s crossing of the rails near the intersection of Industrial Highway and South Washington Street before it could officially open.

That opening occurred Wednesday afternoon, April 24, with borough, Montgomery County, Chester County and state officials all having a hand in cutting the billowing red ribbon.
