KYW Newsradio finds new program director in NYC market

Alex Silverman, assistant director of news and programming for WCBS Newsradio (880-AM) in New York, will take over at KYW on Sept. 24.

Bala Cynwyd-based KYW Newsradio will turn to Alex Silverman, former  assistant director of news and programming for WCBS Newsradio (880-AM) in New York, to replace Steve Butler as program director.

Silverman joined WCBS in 2011 as an anchor and reporter, with a particular focus on transportation, urban history, and LGBTQ issues. He led coverage on events such as Hurricane Sandy, the Orlando night club shooting, Boston Marathon bombing, the 2013 New York mayoral election, and the deadly Metro-North and Amtrak train derailments., writes Jeff Blumenthal in the Philadelphia Business Journal.

A 2010 graduate of Syracuse University Newhouse School of Communications, Silverman is the industry representative to the board of directors of WJPZ, the university’s student-run radio station, and provides operational, financial and technical oversight.

Parent company Entercom Communications Corp. (NYSE: ETM) announced in July that Butler would be leaving KYW at the end of the year almost 40 years after he began his tenure there and two decades after he became program director. Butler told staff in an email that the decision to leave was his and that he would work with Entercom Philadelphia Market Manager David Yadgaroff to identify a successor.
