Tech Talk: ‘Fiber cut’ triggers multi-state internet outage

Outage reports for Comcast and other ISPs flared up across the country on Friday afternoon, as the Philly-based communications giant was affected by a “fiber cut” from an infrastructure partner.

Comcast said on its Twitter account that one of its “large backbone network partners” suffered an  accidental break in its optic fiber network, which affected Comcast’s service, and that of other ISPs, writes Roberto Torres at technical.ly.

Comcast has some 2 million customers in what it calls the “Freedom Region,” which encompasses Philadelphia, Northern Delaware, parts of New Jersey and the Philly suburbs.
