Starbucks closes stores for anti-bias training

More than 8,000 company-owned Starbucks stores closed May 28  to give 175,000 employees anti-discrimination training.

Closing that many stores for an afternoon cost a lot of money… up to $12 million in lost profit, writes Neal Freyman at morningbrew.com.

In April, two black men were arrested at a Philadelphia cafe. The crime? Asking to use the bathroom without having bought anything (they were waiting on a third person to arrive). Protests alleging racial injustice spread, the company apologized for the incident, and it changed its bathroom policy to be more accommodating. But those were baby steps compared with Monday’s main event.
