PA tops nation in beer production

This year, 60 competitors are registered to run in front of thousands of attendees on May 6 at the Sly Fox Brewery, 331 Circle of Progress, Pottstown. Goats run in heats of six with the winners advancing until there is a single champion for whom the brewery’s annual Maibock is named.(Image courtesy flickr.com)

We’re Number 1! We’re Number 1! We’re Number 1!

No, we’re not talking about the Eagles.

According to a study by the Brewers Association, Pennsylvania ranks number 1 in the U.S for barrels of beer produced at 3.9 million. The next highest state is California at 3.2 million. To put that into perspective, that means CA is producing 1 barrel of beer for every 12 people in the state, whereas PA is producing 1 barrel for every 3 people in the state, according to breweriesinpa.com.

The number of breweries opening in the state is also on a steady rise, and as of 2017 has taken its biggest jump ever. It’s hard to believe, but 7 years ago (2011) there were only 88 breweries operating in the state. Between 2016 and 2017 the state grew by almost 100 breweries! That’s more than the past 3 years combined. Putting the state at over 300 breweries, the story continues.

In Montgomery County we have several craft breweries, including Sly Fox in Pottstown, Tired Hands in Ardmore, Round Guys in Lansdale and Forest & Main in Ambler, just to name a few.

So, back to the Eagles. We’re predicting a win this Sunday, despite being the underdogs. Hey, that could be the name of the newest brewery in Montco, Underdog Brewing!
