Once dismissed as a simple diversion or an unhealthy obsession, depending upon your view of video games, eSports have quickly become a permanent fixture on the world’s athletic landscape.

Colleges are now doling out scholarship for the most skilled gamers, eSports may be included in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, and millions of dollars in prize money are at stake in leagues and tournaments across the globe.

The world, for sure, will never be the same.

Take the popular game Defense of the Ancients 2, for example. More than $126 million has changed hands has as a result of those competing in the game.

League of Legends is not that far behind, with approximately $43 million in prize money having been distributed. StarCraft II and Counter-Strike are two more games that have generated north of $10 million each in player earnings.
