Lower Merion Township officials have delayed the approval for Kimco Realty’s plan to build a six-story apartment complex at Ardmore’s Suburban Square, writes Alison Burdo for Philadelphia Business Journal.

Suburban Square owner Kimco, presented its plans to demolish several existing building and replace them with a six-story mixed-use development at the last meeting of Lower Merion Township Board of Commissioners. Its proposal includes ground-floor retail, over 150 apartments, and underground parking.

However, community members have expressed concern about the size and height of the nearly 59,000-square-foot project. Kimco is looking to circumvent this, by using a township ordinance that allows buildings to be higher if they are within 1,000 feet of Ardmore Regional Rail station.

The ordinance was originally put in place to try and reduce the number of vehicles and ease traffic congestion in the surrounding area. Part of the proposed project, which is currently the site of an Urban Outfitters store, is within the area covered by the ordinance.

But for now the issue remains unresolved and will be revisited at the township’s Building and Planning Committee meeting in early October.
