Cheltenham Township News Portal CitizensCall.net to Close

After five years of operations, Stephen Strahs is closing the Cheltenham Township focused news portal CitizensCall.net due to lack of funds.

Suburban Philadelphia journalism has seen several news outlets shutting down recently, with Cheltenham Township’s CitizensCall.net now joining the list, writes Joseph N. DiStefano for Philly.com.

Owner of CitizensCall.net, Stephen Strahs, said the independent news site has been suspended and will soon be permanently removed.

Strahs worked as an economic-development and labor consultant before moving into independent journalism. However, the new task did not prove to be as rewarding as he was hoping it would be.

Strahs struggled to get advertising revenue was because he was a one-man show. With the hours of research and writing, he was left with little time to court advertisers resulting in funding problems.

“It still wasn’t profitable, despite long hours,” he said in the interview with Philly.com.

The news comes in the wake of NewMedia Investment Group‘s purchase of Bucks and Burlington County’s dailies. Digital First Media has also announced plans to sell its Montgomery, Chester, and Delaware County dailies.

Strahs also does not see investments in several local websites by internet millionaire Michael Golden as a good sign for true reporting.

“Promotions and happy talk, as you know, is quite different from real reporting,” he said.
